Small buttefly. Wings dark brown, forewings with a rows of bluish and light brown spots and hindwings with rows of light brown spots. Body fat and furry. Caterpillar gray with paler spots and stripes, and a prominent orange head. Larvae feed on oak leaves. Flies in late spring to midsummer. Caterpillars feed in late spring, overwinter as pupae, and emerge as adults to fly in the spring. Adults nectar on blackberries, dandelions, violets and other flowers.
A species of the eastern and southwester US, into Mexico. To be found in open areas and the edge of the woodlands.
