Spotted Thyris, Thyris maculata
Thyrididae or Windowed-Wing Moth Family

Adult moth

Wee moth, about 1/2 inch across. Body plump, dark brown. Antennae wiry. Wings dark brown with orange areas. White translucent spots about the middle of the forewing (the "windows"). Two more spots nearly overlapping on hind wings. May be white sectors on edge of wing. Flies by day.

Adult moth

Ranges over the northeast US and adjacent Canada, but said to be rare and local. BAMONA (Butterlies and Moths of North America) has no records for Virginia.  Has been spotted a number of times in Wildwood. Very fond of New Jersey tea (both pictures are on flowers of that shrub).
