Autumn Olive, Elaeagnus umbellata
Elaeagnaceae or Autumn Olive Family

Closeup of flowers

Shrub to about 12 feet tall. Leaves alternate on the stem, oval, speckled with silvery scales. Flowers silvery white. Fruits initially brownish green with silvery scales, turning red, juicy, and still speckled with silvery scales.

Ornamental shrub from Asia, escaping from cultivation. In Wildwood, occasional, in the Great South Meadow, and at the Park border on Main Street, possibly in other open areas. Although an invasive exotic, it does benefit the soil by harboring nitrogen-fixing bacteria.

No other shrub with silvery scales on leaves, flowers, and berries has been reported from the Park.
