Tall plant, 2 to 5 feet tall. Leaves long and narrow,
slightly toothed, not opposite each other. Flowers in a dense cluster at the top. Buds long, pinkish-green. A few open at any time. Flowers with white petals that turn pink as they fade; sepals white to pink. Flower is oddly shaped; sepals are bent back, all four petals point up, and the stamens and pistil point down. Fruits are capsules tightly pressed to the stem.
Blooms in summer.
A pretty native of meadows and fields. Occasional in the Park in meadow areas.
The peculiar flowers are distinctive, making identification easy. |
