Pale Indian Plantain, Arnoglossum atriplicfolium
(also called Cacalia atriplicifolia)
Asteraceae or Sunflower Family

Plant

Moderately tall plant, 3 to 6 feet, with a loose open cluster of small white flowerheads. Stems covered with whitish bloom. Leaves relatively large, broadly triangular, pale beneath, with large teeth-like lobes. Flowerheads longer than wide, white, striped green. Flowers white, several in each head. Blooms in summer. Fruits are dark seeds with plumes of white hairs, in clusters.

Native plant with interesting leaves. Likes open spaces in woods. In Wildwood, occasional along woodland edges along Riverway bikepath and Wildwood Drive. Several plants across from Outdoor Classroom.

The underwhelming white flowerheads and interesting leaves make identification easy.
