Scarlet Pimpernel, Anagallis arvensis
Primulaceae or Primrose Family

Plant

Low, sprawling, tiny plant. Leaves small, egg-shaped, opposite each other. Flowers on long stalks from the axils of the leaves, with five round orange-red petals (actually sepals), open only in sunshine. Summer bloomer.

Alien weed of waste places, gardens, yards. In Wildwood, occasional in the parking areas and along the roads and bikeways. Often overlooked if the sun isn't shining.

The dainty round petals and the unusual color make this tiny plant easy to identify when noticed.
