Sunflower, about 3 feet tall. Lower leaves opposite each other on short leafstalks. Flowerheads small, 1 to 1 and a half inches wide, with 5 to 8 yellow ray flowers and a cluster of yellow-orange tubular disc flowers.
Elegant native of woodlands and wood edges. Occasional in Wildwood along the edges of the woods and in sunny spots.
The smallest sunflower in the Park. Could be confused with several species of coneflower, but they have leaves that alternate on the stem, and a central disc that is much denser, often cone-shaped. |
