Low, ephemeral plant. Leaves all basal, grass-like, with a pale strip down the center. Flowers in a small cluster, with 6 white petals that have a green stripe on the back. Flowers open only in sunshine. Sprouts, blooms, and dies in early spring.
A charming ornamental from southern Europe that often escapes into the wild. Rare in Wildwood, but sometimes found along the Riverway bike path. May be more common than we think given its brief flowering time.
The green strips on the back of the nearly pure white petals easily identifies this plant. When not in bloom, unlikely to be noticed. |
