Winterberry Holly, Ilex verticillata
Aquifoliaceae or Holly Family

Plant A small to large shrub. Leaves oval, with small teeth, falling in autumn. Flowers very small, at bases of the leaves, with 5 to 8 white petals. Blooms in summer. Red berries form in autumn and last all winter.

A native shrub of wet places; however, the ones in the Park are not natural, but were planted around the restrooms.

Nearly unmistakable in winter when covered with red berries and no leaves. In summer it is a non-descript shrub, but easy to recognize given its restricted location. American holly (Ilex opaca) has evergreen leaves with sharp spiny teeth.
