Showy Emerald, Dichorda iridaria
Geometridae or Geometer Family

Showy moth, medium sized, about an inch across. Wings a deep emerald green, frosted and fringed with white hairs and marked with white diagonal lines on both fore- and hindwings. Body green.

Caterpillar is a brown inchworm, with paired rows of wing-like plates along the back. Feeds on poison ivy, staghorn sumac and shining sumac.

Known mainly in a region from Indiana south to northern Georgia, but also reported from southern Quebec to southern Florida, west to Oklahoma. In Virginia mostly known from the coast and the extreme Southwest. Very rare in Wildwood; only reported once, in 2017. However, two of its three favored larval foods are known in the Park, so maybe it might move in.
