Microscopic Flora and Fauna

On 3 April 2000, students in Dr. Coté's Principles of Biology Class at Radford University examined water samples from the wetland at the base of the weeping tufa cliffs at the entrance of Wildwood Park.  Although it was still early spring and the water was cold, an amazing diversity of organisms was found.

The Organisms

The students involved in the study:

Algae:
Spirogyra
Microspora
Zygnema
Gloeocystis

Diatoms
   Cymbella
   Navicula
   Synedra

Protozoa:
A ciliate

Animals:
A copepod -- Canthocamptus?
Fly (Diptera) larva -- Euparyphus
