Microscopic Flora and Fauna

On 3 April 2001, students in Dr. Coté's Principles of Biology Class at Radford University examined water samples from the wetland at the base of the weeping tufa cliffs at the entrance of Wildwood Park.  This was exactly one year after the first sample from this area was studied.  The weather in the preceding weeks had been unseasonably cold.

Surprisingly no filamentaous algae were seen, although they were abundant in April 2000.  Diatoms and insect nymphs and larva were present both years.  Ostracods were also seen, although they were not seen in April 2000.

The Organisms

The students involved in the study:

Diatoms:
Nitzschia
Navicula

Animals:
An ostracod -- Cypridopsis?
Stonefly (Plecoptera) nymph
Nematode worms
An annelid (bristle worm)?
