Microscopic Flora and Fauna

On 16 October 2001, students in Dr. Coté's Principles of Biology Class at Radford University examined water samples from the wetland at the base of the weeping tufa cliffs at the entrance of Wildwood Park.  This was the first time a sample taken in autumn had been studied.  A diatom shaped like a potato chip (Campylodiscus) was the most unusual new find.

The Organisms

The students involved in the study:

Algae:
Characium
Spirogyra
Other filamentous algae

Diatoms:
Campylodiscus
Navicula

Protozoa:
Ciliates

Animals:
Rotifer
