Microscopic Flora and Fauna

On 22 October 2002, students in Dr. Coté's Principles of Biology Class at Radford University examined water samples from the wetland at the base of the weeping tufa cliffs at the entrance of Wildwood Park.  Since the last survey (April 2001), the wetland was dredged, regraded, and planted with cherry trees by the Radford Beautification Commission.  The algae supporting the wetland ecosystem (Chara vulgaris), quickly repopulated the site.  We were very curious to see if the alteration had affected the diversity and productivity of the wetland.  Although some species seen last October were absent, the variety of species seen was probably greater than in any other survey.  Also notable was the large number of snails; no more than one or two had ever been found in our samples before.

Some pictures will be added when I have time to scan them.
