Microscopic Flora and Fauna

On 2 April 2002, students in Dr. Coté's Principles of Biology Class at Radford University examined water samples from the wetland at the base of the weeping tufa cliffs at the entrance of Wildwood Park.  We now have three samples from early April, 2000, 2001, and 2002.  The weather in 2002 had been cold.

Filamentaous algae were seen, as in April 2000, but unlike April 2001.  Diatoms and insect nymphs and larva were present all three years, all the insects seemed smaller than in previous years.  Ostracods were seen this year and in 2001, but not in 2000, while rotifers were this year and in 2000, but not in 2001.
