A listing of recent changes made to the website, for those interested in new species pages that go up, corrections to the old pages, and new pictures that are added.

13 March 2023
Updated the News Page on how the flowers were faring before the storm.

7 March 2023
Restarted the News Page.  No current events that I know of are planned, but reports are coming in of early blooming flowers.  Check it out.

19 April 2022
Added pictures on the pages for Bloodroot a wildflower, for Mossy Maze Polypore (a fungus) and for Scarlet Cup (another fungus). 

22 March 2022
Added a new page for Eastern Garter Snake, and added a link for this species to the Herp list.  Also corrected the name of the Eastern Kingsnake (Lampropeltis getula getula), which had been misspelled, and updated the scientifc name of Queen Snake, which has been changed (Natrix septemvitta to Regina septemvitta).

Added a new page for Fragile White Carpet Moth, and added this species to the Butterfly list.

Added a new picture to the page for Coltsfoot  (a wildflower).  Added new picures to page for Carolina Vetch (another wildflower).

Added a new picture to the page for the Cabbage White  (a butterfly).  Added a new page for Emerald Ash Borer (an invasive beetle and killer of ash trees).  Added the Emerald Ash Borer to the Other Insects and Spiders page.

Added a new picture to the page for the Canadian Snakeroot  (a wildflower) and added several new pictures to the page for Black Haw (a shrub).

Added a new picture to the page for the Arrowhead Spider.  Added a new page for the Bowl and Doily Weaver, (another spider), and added it to the spider list on the Other Insects and Spiders page.

Revised the page for Prairie Ragwort, (a wildflower), giving it a new name, Appalachian Ragwort, adding some new pictures, and including a disscusion of the current controversy of the relationship of our plants to other ragworts.

23 February 2022

New page for the Virgin Tiger Moth.  This is a new species for Wildwood, so added to the Butterfly and Moth list.

Added a second picture, with thanks to Nancy Kent, to the page for the Twelve-Spotted Skimmer  (a dragonfly), and revised the description of the spots to be (hopefully) clearer.  Added new pictures to the page for Aniseroot (a wildflower).

Revised the page for Yellow Corydalis  (a wildflower), with new, closeup pictures of the flowers.

Revised the page for the Buckeye Leaf Miner (a fly), gave its identification, and added a picture of the adult.  This species was discovered in Wildwood in 2017 by Nancy Kent and identified in 2018 by Charley Eiseman. It is fairly new to science, having only been properly described in 2018 by Charley Eiseman and Owen Lonsdale.

Added a page for  Black Moss Dots (a lichen) with pictures.  Added to the Fungi list.

Added a page for the Margined Calligrapher (a hoverfly) with pictures.  Added to the Insect list.

Rewrote the pages for Black Snakeroot and Clustered Snakeroot to compare them and link them to the new page on Canada Snakeroot.  New pictures for Clustered Snakeroot.  Also added Canada Snakeroot to the Wildflower Key.

Added a page for our third snakeroot species, which has been definitively identified, Canada Snakeroot.  Added to the Wildflower Page, the Plant Index, and the Phylogenetic List.  Sometime soon, I will revise the other two snakeroot pages to compare to and link to Canada Snakeroot.  I will also add it to the Wildflower identification page.

23 June 2021

Another serious correction today.  The Waxy Meadow Rue page was rewritten with some new photographs, and new information on where it occurs in the Park.  The page for Tall Meadow Rue was removed as the plant earlier identified as this species was a female of Waxy Meadow Rue.  Also had to delete Tall Meadow Rue from all the pages where it is referenced.

Serious correction this time.  It was discovered that the resident phlox in Wildwood had been misidentified.  Corrected this information on its page --see Mountain Phlox page, and rewrote the Species of the Week spotlight on this species. Corrected the entries on the Wildflower Page, the Plant Index, and the Phylogenetic List.  Corrected the name of this plant in the "What's Blooming" archive.  Finally, corrected the entry in the Wildflower Key.

Added a page for Arrowhead Spider, and added it to the list of Insects and Spiders in the Park.  Added comparison to the page for Arrow-Shaped Micrathena.  Corrected an error on the spider list (Harvestmen are not spiders.)

  • Added links to two research projects by Radford University students in Wildwood. One study looks at phenology -- the timing of seasonal activities of living things, and the other examines the health of Wildwood Park's forests. The links were added to the website Research page and to the News page. The more recent study was also featured on our homepage.
